Nintendo’s new tactical role-playing game Fire Emblem Fates, which will be released on Thursday, June 25, 2015 in Japan and 2016 in North America and Europe, is the first Nintendo game to officially allow players to have same-sex marriages with in-game characters.
Nintendo mentioned that players can have male same-sex marriages in the Conquest edition and female same-sex marriages in the Birthright version of the game.
This statement comes after Nintendo removed a bug from life simulator Tomodachi Life in 2014 that allowed gamers to have a same-sex marriage, a move criticized by some in the gaming community. At the time, the publisher stated that it “never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life.”
With Fire Emblem Fates, Nintendo said, “We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate.” The company also stated that “in the end of course, the game should be fun to play.”
