NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) — Susan Sarandon is proud that her children see past established gender roles and push the envelope when it comes to abiding by them.
Sarandon shared details about her son Miles’ occasional gender fluidity with People Monday night at TrevorLIVE, an event to support LGBTQ youth. “My son Miles is a musician and a DJ and sometimes when his band performs they all wear dresses, and he has long hair,” she told the magazine.
Miles, 23, is one of Sarandon’s three children also including Eva Amurri and Jack Henry Robbins. The actress told People that allowing her kids to grow up in New York City was intentional.
“I wanted to raise my kids in New York because, as a privileged kid, I think you can become very isolated and at least if you’re privileged, you should understand you’re privileged, and not take it for granted,” she said. “I was just not vigilant or talented enough to have done it successfully in Los Angeles.”
Sarandon, who attended TrevorLIVE to support her friend Ian McKellen, is a big fan of coloring outside the lines. She acknowledged how difficult it is especially for teens to step outside social boundaries saying: “There are so many kids these days who are questioning, gay or transgender, who have a very tough time and it could be very dangerous for them. I think it’s really great that we are having all these conversations and getting kids to understand that there is somewhere we can go to talk it over.”
