Coldplay frontman Chris Martin paid his respects to the late Beau Biden by performing a song in his honor at the funeral service on Saturday.
After learning that Beau Biden was a big Coldplay fan, Martin volunteered to perform at the service at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Martin performed his band’s 2005 song “Til Kingdom Come” to a crowd that included President Obama, former President Bill Clinton, and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Martin performed the X&Y tune in stripped-down form, using only an acoustic guitar and the intermittent notes from a church organ as accompaniment.
“He lived a life where the means were as important as the ends. He made you want to be a better daughter or son or a better brother or sister. And better at your job, a better soldier. He made you want to be a better person,” Obama said in his remarks. “Isn’t that finally the measure of a man, the way he lives, how he treats others no matter what life may throw at him? We do not know how long we’ve got here. We don’t know when fate will intervene. We cannot discern God’s plan.”
Biden, an Iraq war veteran and the former Delaware attorney general, is survived by his wife Hallie and their two children.
