While millions of Americans spent Memorial Day weekend honoring those who died fighting for their country, Lena Dunham observed the national holiday by posting a lingerie photograph and joking it would make a great dinner ensemble because she is “free.”
The actress and creator of the HBO series Girls, who once said America was “too puritanical,” shared this image Monday with her 1.7 million Instagram followers.

“Love my @lonelylingerie and I think I will wear it to dinner with some boots & a smile because we are all very lucky to be free,” she captioned the photograph.
While many of Dunham’s fans praised her for being so “confident” with her post, not all of them were as receptive to the body-positive image.
“Did a self obsessed over privileged under talented TURD crawl out of the bowl to don lingerie?” said 2johnnyt. “Can’t wait for your next fake rape accusation (for attention) Lena!”
“I literally just puked,” wrote izicochran. “Oh god no,” said csroyston.
Dunham politicized Mother’s Day earlier this month on Twitter, by asking others to join her in protecting abortion rights on a day about motherhood.
“This Mother’s Day, let’s vow to protect our right to become mothers when and how we want #choice #blessthemothers,” she wrote.
