NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton’s wife, CBS legal analyst Rikki Klieman screened her pro-police documentary In the Line of Fire at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City on Thursday night.
Page Six reports the Investigation Discovery documentary profiles three heroic police officers, one of them being Medal of Honor award-winning officer Ivan Marcano, who was shot in the chest in NYC by three men who were robbing a cab driver in October 2012.
Marcano, then-27, drove up to the scene while on a date, and pursued the suspects after being shot, and ended up killing one the men, while the other two were arrested later.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at the time, “In a remarkable display of marksmanship and cool, he struck one of the suspects.”
The officer joined Bratton and a number of others on a panel at the screening.
Klieman reportedly pitched the idea prior to unrest in Ferguson, MO and New York City last year after the death of Eric Garner, back in February 2014.
Of those events, the director said, “it certainly became more meaningful and more urgent to do this show after [those events].”
She told the site: “I passionately wanted to do these stories, and I became even more passionate about telling these stories at a time when the discourse, the debate about policing in America, has taken a sharp turn.”
She continued: “Police are being defined by a half a dozen incidents instead of being defined by the people that they really are.”
Panel moderator John Miller, also the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, said: “Police are a far handier target [than military or intelligence officers] in terms of being out there on the street . . . ISIS is going to be a factor in the back of the minds of every police officer in the country,” not only in New York, Washington, DC, and LA.”
Investigation Discovery said of the project:
Across the United States every day, brave men and women in blue risk their lives to serve and protect all Americans. With daily headlines denouncing the negative and harmful acts of law enforcement, Investigation Discovery (ID) turns its cameras on the professionals to explore the critical role so many officers play in protecting and serving.
In the Line of Fire will premiere on ID Sunday.
