From grunge to Tin Pan Alley, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder traded in his guitar for a business casual look on Tuesday, and led fans in a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at a Chicago Cubs game.
According to Rolling Stone, the “Jeremy” singer and Chicago-area native dropped by Wrigley Field for what has almost become an annual tradition, and asked fans to join him as he sang the anthem during the 7th inning stretch.
Wearing a #14 button to pay tribute to Cubs legend Ernie Banks, who passed away in January, after finishing the song, the liberal icon threw a Cubs hat into the crowd:
After the 1998 death of longtime Cubs announcer Harry Caray, who lead the crowd in the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” for almost two decades, special guests began filling in for games.
Rolling Stone reports Vedder was among the first to fill in for the legend by singing the song during the stretch of a game during ’98 season, and has since become a staple for fans.
