HBO announced Monday the web-only comedy series High Maintenance, which follows a New York marijuana dealer and his crazy diverse group of clients, is coming to television from video sharing site Vimeo for six new episodes, according to Deadline.
The popular series, which stars actor/producer Ben Sinclair as a Brooklyn weed dealer who delivers his product throughout New York City, is written by Sinclair and his wife Katja Blichfeld, and produced by the couple, alongside Russell Gregory.
As a nameless dealer, only referred to as “The Guy,” Sinclair’s travels provide a look into the lives of customers, and how they choose to smoke. The Guy’s clientele is generally played by a diverse series of guests, who are all linked by their love for pot.
“High Maintenance has proven to be one of today’s most highly-acclaimed online comedies,” president of HBO programming Michael Lombardo said. “We are thrilled to bring this sophisticated and clever series to our HBO audience.”
“The pickup by HBO is incredible validation for the show as well as the global creative community developing and releasing innovative programming directly on Vimeo,” company CEO Kerry Trainor said.
The show’s creators released early episodes free of charge, before partnering up with Vimeo for Season 2, which was then made available only for Vimeo’s On Demand platform, per Deadline.
“We have been growing this show organically for three years now, and we are elated to bring it into full maturity at HBO,” creators Blichfeld and Sinclair said.
In addition to six new episodes, HBO will make the previous 19 episodes available on HBO, HBO NOW, and HBO GO. The announcement was made on April 20, which has been designated as the unofficial nationwide holiday for marijuana smokers.
High Maintenance was Vimeo’s first original series.
