On April 14, Breitbart News reported that country singers Tim McGraw and Billy Currington would be headlining a gun control fundraiser for Sandy Hook Promise on July 17.
On April 17 Rolling Stone magazine intimated that Breitbart News is really pushing a non-story — that our report on McGraw’s participation in the gun control fundraiser is based on previous Breitbart reports rather than facts proving the gun control aspects of the story.
Rolling Stone even tried to paint a benign picture of things by claiming that Sandy Hook Promise “doesn’t see itself as an anti-gun organization.”
But think about this–Sandy Hook Promise, the beneficiary of McGraw’s gun control concert, supports Oregon Senate Bill 941, a bill which expands background checks to every gun sale in the state–both retail and private–and which opens the door to legalized firearm confiscation in the state by requiring judges “to determine” whether an individual ordered to receive outpatient mental care is unfit for gun possession.
On April 16, Breitbart News received a statement from McGraw in which he said he was playing the gun control fundraiser for “community,” not gun control. Breitbart News pointed out that money is still going to be raised for gun control, regardless of McGraw’s intentions, and we emailed McGraw’s rep with a question regarding Sandy Hook Promise’s mission against “gun violence” and how the money McGraw raises will be used in that mission.
As of the publication of this article, we have received no response.
But Billy Currington did make some news by announcing he is not going to play the gun control fundraiser. Amid the backlash from outraged fans, Currington said:
I’ve never been one to take on controversial issues – I’m a singer. I do feel strongly about honoring and supporting the Sandy Hook community and will be making a donation to a local organization. I appreciate people’s freedom and passion for whatever cause they want to support, however, I am choosing to step aside from this fundraiser and will focus instead on the rest of the tour dates as I look forward to being on the road with Tim and Chase and having a blast with all of the fans.
Yet McGraw remains, and is planning to play a concert for the gun control group that supports Oregon’s SB 941. Because of this, even though the concert is in Connecticut, we have to wonder how much of the money raised by McGraw will go to efforts legalizing gun confiscation in Oregon?
After all, Sandy Hook Promise says the “proceeds from the show will benefit Sandy Hook Promise’s work to prevent gun violence.”
