Newark, New Jersey, police are investigating a complaint that rapper DMX helped rob one of his own fans at gunpoint in the city early Sunday morning.
The victim, a 21-year-old man, told law enforcement he recognized the artist and his entourage as they were pumping gas at an Exxon station at around 12:30, NJ reports.
The fan allegedly approached DMX, best known for his 1999 hit “Up in Here,” and the pair held a conversation about music, before a member of the rapper’s entourage produced a firearm and demanded he give them all his money.
“The two had a brief conversation about rap music and during the conversation a male in DMX’s entourage, showed the victim a gun and demanded the victim’s money,” Newark Police spokesman Ronald Glover said in a statement.
When the alleged victim cooperated with the gunman, DMX then allegedly grabbed $3,200 in cash, before leaving the scene in one of the four black Cadillac Escalades his group was traveling in, Sgt. Glover told the news site.
As the rapper’s entourage exited the scene, the victim reportedly pursued, and was able to get close enough to record one of the SUVs’ license plate numbers, which he provided to police.
The officer did not disclose if the license plate has been connected to DMX or any of his associates, or if the rapper has been contacted regarding the investigation.
Thus far, no arrests have been made, and no criminal charges have been filed, Glover said.
Legally named Earl Simmons, DMX, 44, performed at the Masters of Ceremony show at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark Saturday night, just before the alleged robbery.
Along with being a successful rapper, Simmons has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Exit Wounds, Coach Carter, How High, and Without a Trace.
