Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei is set to play journalist and women’s activist Gloria Steinem in a new HBO miniseries.
Tomei will headline Ms., a story about the magazine of the same title that was founded by Steinem in 1971, according to The Wrap.
Veteran actress Kathy Najimy will reportedly co-star as U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug, a co-founder of the magazine, who later founded the Women’s Media Center with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan. George Clooney is the executive producer, along with Grant Heslov and Silver Linings Playbook‘s Bruce Cohen. Steinem will serve as a consultant on the miniseries.
According to Deadline, Tomei’s involvement is part of the recent first-look development deal she signed with HBO. Najimy is also no stranger to the network, having appeared in several episodes of Veep.
Ms. marks the second Steinem project from HBO; in 2011, the pay cabler produced Gloria – In Her Own Words, a documentary about Steinem’s transition from reporter to women’s activist icon.
