While the likes of Jon Stewart and Charlie Sheen have come forward to defend disgraced NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams for lying about his coverage of the Iraq War, neither have come out as wholeheartedly as Girls star and daughter, Allison Williams.
Per a report from Page Six, Allison spoke with Late Night’s Seth Meyers during a Q&A at an event Wednesday about her career, wherein she publicly spoke out about the controversy involving her father and called him “an honest man, a truthful man,” adding, “I know you can trust him.”
Meyers quizzed the younger Williams about the state of her family, to which she responded: “This has been a really hard time… obviously [it’s] toughest on my dad, who is sort of bearing the full burden of the responsibility for it, but my mom has been so strong and my brother has been amazing.”
She continued: “One thing this experience has not done is shake my trust and belief in him as a man. He’s a really good man, an honest man, a truthful man — he has so much integrity and so much respect for journalism. And yes, he’s a really good dad. I know you can trust him because, as any good daughter does, I’ve tested him on that.”
Allison also recalled his time in Iraq in 2003, when she was only a freshman in high school, reportedly telling Meyers in a somber tone, “there was a father-daughter dance… before he left he said he would be back in time.”
As the day was coming, it didn’t seem like he was going to make it as he had promised … I was so upset and I got a surprise call from my dad from Iraq, and he was asking if I had a date to the dance. So that’s the kind of man he is. I can’t wait until he’s back on TV and I know many of you guys feel that way. Thank you for all your support.
Williams currently stars in HBO’s Girls alongside Lena Dunham. She made headlines in January for her participation in a scene on the series in which she received “analingus” from a co-star.
Brian Williams was asked about the segment at the time, to which he replied: “She’s always been an actress. For us, watching her is the family occupation and everybody has to remember it’s acting, no animals were harmed during the filming, and ideally nobody gets hurt,” he explained.
The anchor is currently suspended from his post at NBC for a period of six months, without pay, for claiming he was onboard a helicopter that was hit by enemy RPG fire during the preliminary stages of the Iraq War.
