Netflix announced Monday that its service is now available in Cuba for those with an Internet connection and access to international payment methods.
In a statement, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company is “delighted” to bring its collection of streaming movies and television shows to the island nation.
“We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world,” Hastings said. “Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members.”
Netflix began offering service to Latin America in 2011, according to the press release.
The move by the largest provider of streaming entertainment comes in the wake of relaxed trade regulations between the United States and Cuba implemented last year. Part of those relaxed restrictions includes the ability of U.S. companies to offer Internet and telecommunications services to the long-heavily sanctioned country. TechCrunch predicts that these types of service offerings to Cuba will increase as the relaxed regulations continue to take effect.
