Phylicia Rashad, who starred as Bill Cosby’s on-screen wife for more than a decade, is refuting claims that the comedian drugged and sexually assaulted multiple women.
The 66-year-old actress told Showbiz44 that she thinks the accusations have been “orchestrated” in order to destroy Cosby’s legacy.
“Someone is determined to keep Bill Cosby off TV. And it’s worked. All his contracts have been cancelled,” she said.
TV Land pulled re-runs of The Cosby Show back in November, while the sitcom is still being aired on other channels.
“This show represented America to the outside world,” Rashad said. “This was the American family. And now you’re seeing it being destroyed. Why?”
Director Judd Apatow has taken to Twitter to slam Rashad’s support for Cosby.
“Phylicia- how many women need to be raped before you realize he destroyed his own legacy? 40? 50? For me it’s one.”
He added, “Forget these women. She is worried about her SAG residuals disappearing if they are heard in court. Shameful.”
Rashad also dismissed claims made by supermodels Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson, saying, “Oh, please.”
The actress spoke highly of Cosby’s wife, Camille.
“This is a tough woman, a smart woman,” she said. “She’s no pushover.”
Finally, Rashad questioned what the media would do to Cosby if he were to speak out about the allegations now.
