Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who both describe themselves as nonreligious, will head to The Vatican some time in early January to visit with Pope Francis on a special VIP visit.
Pitt, who was born in Oklahoma and raised in Missouri, grew up a Baptist but later distanced himself from his faith after entering the entertainment industry, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2012, “I don’t have a great relationship with religion. I oscillate between agnosticism and atheism.”
Jolie credits Christian war-hero Louis Zamperini, the inspiration behind the film Unbroken, with teaching her to embrace spirituality. Although Angelina she does not identify with a specific religion, she reportedly dropped to her knees on the set of the film to “pray for a miracle” after complications arose during filming of the final scene.
Thirty-nine-year-old Jolie spoke about her views on spirituality after working with Zamperini on the WWII biopic, telling People Magazine, “When there is an obstacle, you have to rise to the challenge, not be overwhelmed by it.”
She added, “And we’re not alone in the world. I don’t know if there’s a name for that — religion or faith — just that there’s something greater than all of us, and it’s uniting and beautiful.”
A source close to the couple told US Weekly that both Pitt and Jolie “admire the Pope” and “like the Pope’s message.”
