Gwyneth Paltrow, who announced in March that she was splitting from her husband due to “conscious uncoupling,” now tells  Harper Bazaar UK that she sometimes regrets her decision to walk away from her marriage.

The 42-year-old actress spoke about her relationship with ex-husband, Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin, in a candid interview with the publication.

“We’ve made a lot of mistakes, and we’ve had good days and bad days, but I have to say, I’m proud of us for working through so much stuff together–and not blaming and shaming,” she said, via ET. “Of course, there are times when I think it would have been better if we had stayed married, which is always what your children want. But we have been able to solidify this friendship, so that we’re really close.”

Paltrow explained that she feels she still owes a lot to Martin, 37, who was there for her during some of her darkest moments. She and Martin began dating shortly after the death of her father, Bruce.

Paltrow said:

I felt like I was going to die of grief. I remember waking up, on one particular night, where I felt like I was having a heart attack and I couldn’t breathe. … I lay on the floor of my apartment in London and I thought, “I’m not going to survive this.” And he just picked me up and he was so loving and patient through all my grieving.

Paltrow continued to dote on her ex, stating, “He’s really great in a crisis. He has incredible empathy when it comes to somebody’s pain.”

The actress does think Martin, who was 25 when they wed in 2003, may have been too young for marriage. She said it was unfair of her to rely on him as heavily as she did and to expect him to be a grown man and a “pillar of strength,” something he actually always lived up to.

The couple shares two children, Apple and Moses, yet Paltrow does think that at times, it would be easier to say, “I never want to see you again,” as she described their current relationship as “always a moving, amorphous thing.”

During the interview, Paltrow accused women of being “vitriolic” to one another. She cannot fathom why “they want to twist words, why they want to read about someone else in a negative light.”

In reference to her support for President Obama, the Iron Man star also reveals she is not afraid to stand by her “principles.”

Finally, the GOOP founder said she has learned ways to look at situations objectively and not judge others. She has also learned the “power of kindness.”
