DVD copies of the 2004 film Team America: World Police are currently sold out at at least three major retail outlets in the wake of the Christmas Day online release of the Sony Pictures comedy The Interview.
Copies of the film, which saw South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone poke fun at former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, are sold out at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, and Walmart.com, reports Mashable.
Sony released The Interview through several online outfits on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, and the film was subsequently snatched up illegally at least 750,000 times in the first 20 hours it was made available.
The studio’s initial plan to completely scrap the controversial film reignited interest in Team America, because of the comparisons the films drew for their depiction of North Korea’s leaders. When theater chains thought that Sony was not going to release the film, the Alamo Drafthouse independent theater chain in Texas announced they would be screening Team America at their 17 locations. Paramount Pictures ultimately prevented the Alamo Drafthouse from screening the film.
Despite The Interview‘s success on YouTube and with illegal downloaders, the film is projected to lose a significant amount of money and got drubbed by critics. The film sits at a 48% “rotten” rating on film review aggregator RottenTomatoes.com.
