Actor Randy Quaid, best known for his roles in the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to allow him and his wife Evi to return from exile in Canada.
The couple reportedly fled the country in 2010 after they were arrested for illegally staying at a home in California.
Authorities warned the couple they would be arrested on felony charges if they returned to the United States, and revoked their passports.
After criminal charges were filed, the pair fled to Canada, where Evi was granted citizenship.
Quaid applied for refugee status in Canada, but immigration officials denied his request.
TMZ reports the couple has now filed a lawsuit against Kerry and officials at the Department of State, claiming they have been left “unable to identify themselves as American citizens.”
They are seeking new passports so they can return to the United States.
