New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s agenda to put horse-drawn carriage rides out to pasture now has an ally in the animal rights group PETA.
PETA has announced the release of a new ad campaign in support of the proposed ban, which will feature minor celebrities Tim Gunn, Anjelica Huston, Edie Falco and Russell Simmons.
The group and its celebrity delegates will reportedly urge City Council members to support the Mayor’s proposed horse-carriage ban by highlighting their perception of the cruel nature of the tradition.
PETA told The New York Post the ads would feature a horse that died on the street in 2011, paired with a photo of one of the celebrities and a quote.
Anjelica Huston will say, “It’s surprising to me that a city known for its progressive spirit still allows this cruel and dangerous tourist trap.”
Tim Gunn will state, “Carriage drivers have been filmed spewing racist, sexist and homophobic taunts at anyone who dares express concern for the unfortunate horses.”
New York State labor coalition AFL-CIO announced their opposition to the ban on Friday, citing the loss of 300 middle-class jobs.
AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento said:
At a time of wage stagnation and an economy that replaces good jobs with those that confine workers to poverty, it’s shocking that the city would even consider destroying the horse carriage industry.
The PETA ads are set for release on Monday.
