Medical staff at a central Colombian hospital were shocked after they found a potato wedged in the vagina of a 22-year-old woman, according to Cosmopolitan.
The girl reportedly sought medical attention due to severe abdominal pain. She was given a pelvic exam and a nurse discovered a germinated potato with roots growing inside of her uterus.
Apparently, her mother advised her to use the spud as birth control. “My mom told me that if I didn’t want to get pregnant, I should put a potato up there, and I believed her,” said the unidentified patient.
The potato had been implanted by the young woman two weeks before, but doctors were able to remove it without surgery or causing damage to her health. The mother was allegedly criticized for giving “terrible contraceptive advice” to her daughter.
The Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, which attempts to reduce teen pregnancy, conducted a study that found contraceptive awareness in the South American country to be lacking. Sex education is reportedly mandatory in Colombia.
Parents don’t actively discuss safe sex with their children, which often leads to unplanned pregnancies, high levels of sexually transmitted diseases, or extreme cases of “do-it-yourself” contraceptive techniques.
“A recent campaign by Bienestar Familiar (ICBF) aimed at reducing the high levels of teenage pregnancy in Colombia stated that young people’s general rejection of conventional contraceptive methods, such as condoms and contraceptive pills, coupled with a macho society which often saw girls pressured into having unsafe sex, contributed to a high level of unwanted teenage pregnancies,” wrote Colombia Reports, reported in the Latin Times.
