Billy Crystal stood on the Emmy stage Monday night, tasked with paying tribute to Robin Williams. Audiences had mourned Williams’ loss for weeks on social media following the comic’s suicide.
Now, a longtime pal and colleague had to make audiences laugh and tear up remembering some of Williams’ best work.
Crystal did so in a way that was efficient, heartfelt and pure.
“He made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him, ” said Crysal, his voice husky but firm. Crystal testified to the lightning wit Williams brought to so many projects, but he also explored the generosity at the core of his persona.
“It’s very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in our lives,” Crystal said, mentioning how he entertained the troops as well as sick children in between making comedy classics.
“Robin Williams … what a concept,” Crystal declared, a spin on a classic Williams’ comedy record.
