Some social media users said something stronger than “cowabunga” after they saw a new poster for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.
An Australian poster for the film, opening next month in the U.S., features the four heroes bounding off of a skyscraper exploding behind them. The image brought to mind the crumbling Twin Towers on 9/11. What made the connection worse was the film’s Australian release date printed at the bottom of the poster–Sept. 11, 2014.
Paramount, the studio behind the project, used its Australian twitter feed to share the image. The studio quickly yanked the tweet after a chorus of disapproval rang out across the digital landscape.
It’s not the first time a movie poster’s ties to 9/11 caused a problem. An early poster for the 2002 film Spider-Man featured the web slinger posing between the Twin Towers. That ad campaign, too, was scrapped.
