Patriotic 'America' Soared at Box Office on July 4

The new docudrama America, a robust defense of this country against far-left icons like Noam Chomsky, exploded at the box office on Independence Day.

The film, which opened Wednesday, jumped more than 60 percent on July 4. The Dinesh D’Souza film is expected to haul in roughly $4.5 million over a five-day holiday span, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Impressive figures when one considers the film is only out on 1,1000 locations. The typical summer blockbuster, by comparison, enjoys anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 screens.

The docudrama also didn’t get much support from mainstream movie critics. They savaged the film, with one critic going so far as to warn viewers against seeing it.

Update: CinemaScore, a ranking of audience attitudes toward new films, gave America an “A+” rating. That bodes well for the film’s box office potential in the days and weeks to come.
