Easily one of Summer’s most intriguing weekends. Expect a close battle for the top spot.
Happy Father’s Day everyone. Last week, Sensei’s called A Fault in Our Stars pulling the upset over Edge Of Tomorrow. Sensei was also close on their actual opening weekend figures.
This week, could we looking at yet another Summer box office upset?
Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:
1. 22 Jump Street ($62 Million)– The conventional wisdom is that animated sequels will always open better than the R-rated ones. In most cases, that’s entirely true. This weekend will be the exception. Buzz is strong for this comedy sequel, and the frame is craving a high budget comedy right now. As another conventional wisdom goes – timing is everything.
2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 ($59 Million) – This animated fare is strong, but not Pixar strong, so a spectacular opening may be out of the question (given its high production budget). Still, if the film can establish positive word of mouth, higher results are possible in coming weeks.
3. The Fault in Our Stars ($20 Million) – And just like that, a star is born. A huge welcome to our newest box office marvel, Shailene Woodley. This film only cost $12 million to produce, which its already easily covered, anything earned past this point is just frosting on the cake.
4. Maleficent ($18 Million)– Film will easily pass Divergent to become the year’s highest grossing film (with an actress as the lead). Pretty hard to argue against such numbers.
5. Edge of Tomorrow ($14 million) – Film is doing better overseas, which helps take the sting off its disappointing domestic opening. Unfortunately, the fact remains that the film was enormously expensive to produce ($178 million), so it desperately needs some strong weekend performances to carry any water.

6. X-Men: Days of Future Past ($7 million) – Film remains slightly behind the box office pace of X-Men: The Last Stand. The more positive word of mouth should help bridge that gap in coming weeks. Film will easily break the $200 million domestic mark this week.
In other interesting news:
Despite its status as the early favorite to win the Summer domestically, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will fall behind X-Men: Days of Future Past this week. Godzilla is also set to pass it in coming weeks.
