Will Maleficent out spell X-Men: Days of Future Past?

Last week, X-Men: Days of Future Past did post one of the biggest Memorial Day openings in box office history, but this week faces a formidable Angelina Jolie.

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

 1. Maleficent ($67 million)– Much like Snow White and the Huntsmen, this one is set to surprise the industry with its strong female audience backing. Star Angelina Jolie also continues to be the strongest actress in Hollywood (although Jennifer Lawrence is close to taking that crown). High visuals with a fairy tale backing, concept looks tailor made for Disney which is a “very” good thing.

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past ($44 million) – As predicted, film will easily be the most successful film in the franchise (will pass current leader X-Men: The Last Stand in coming weeks). How much a difference did bringing back the original X-Men cast members make? This installment will pass the total  domestic box office tally of the previous X-Men entry (X-Men: First Class with $146 million) in just its second week of release.

3. A Million Ways to Die in the West ($24 million) – Seth MacFarlane had great success with Ted, but that had Mark Wahlberg to headline. Here, Seth himself is the lead and the film’s trailers look terrible (outside of the Back To The Future cameo, which was hysterical). The concept also lacks the direction Ted had, which points more to a The Campaign-like opening ($26 million). Film will still do well (since the frame is strong right now), just won’t approach the opening Ted had.

4. Godzilla ($13 million) – The big guy is set to challenge the $175 million domestic mark. Wrecking cities and banking millions, what’s not to love?

5. Blended ($7 million) – Film’s opening last week was one of the worst of actor Adam Sandler’s career. Adding to the grief is family audiences being stolen away by Maleficent, which this project desperately needs to post a strong second week. Sorry crew, but Jolie definitely has your number this week.

Checking other favorites:

#. Heaven Is for Real ($1.3 million)– Film approaches the $90 million domestic mark this week. Now comes the homestretch to see if it can cross $100 million.

#. Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($1.1 million) – Film already became 2014’s number one film in total box office gross. Now we see how high it can really go.

#. Mom’s Night Out ($512,000) – Looks to finish around the $10 million domestic mark. Off a $5 million budget, it may not be Heaven is for Real numbers, but for a smaller release it’s respectable.

#. God’s Not Dead ($165,000)– Seriously, this film did better than even the last Muppets film. What does that tell you about the current state of the film industry?

Those are Sensei’s calls. Have a great weekend.
