Gosnell Movie's Crowdfunding Campaign Bests Spike Lee, James Franco for Indiegogo Crown

The minds behind the upcoming Gosnell TV movie aren’t household names like Spike Lee or James Franco. Still, Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney’s Indiegogo campaign trumped crowdfunding efforts by those stars to become the site’s biggest moneymaker to date.

The Gosnell Movie cause has raised $1.5 million from nearly 16,000 people. Compare that to the $1.4 million Lee gathered from a far smaller group of contributors–6,421 backers.

The Gosnell project, detailing the crimes committed by late term abortionist Kermit Gosnell, originally began as part of Kickstarter.com. Its management questioned the graphic nature of the project, which led to McAleer and McElhinney leaving for fellow crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

The campaign isn’t over yet, though. The goal is to reach $2.1 million, and to help that along the Gosnell team is launching a billboard near the Kickstarter.com offices to highlight, as they call it, the company’s hypocrisy.

More high powered names have thrown their weight behind the project in recent days, including Michelle Malkin of Twitchy.com fame and Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint.

The Gosnell team says mainstream media outlets are ignoring the project, but once the campaign reaches its goal that won’t be possible any more.
