'The Anonymous People' Declares War on Addiction Stigma

A new documentary argues that people living in long-term recovery from alcohol and other forms of addiction shouldn’t have to hide their stories or successes.

The Anonymous People got a boost from a recent Kickstarter.com campaign, and now the movie is ready to hit select New York-area theaters Friday as well as the home video market.

The documentary allows people in recovery to share their personal journeys, part of an effort to remove the cultural stigma associated with addiction.

Among the more famous faces in the film is Kristen Johnston, best known for her starring role in the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun.

“This is our black plague,” the actress says in the film.

The focus, however, is on ordinary people who have fought addiction and are leading productive lives as a result. The Anonymous People also contends that treatment over incarceration is the best path to follow.
