The upcoming film Son of God might be a hit before the film opens.
Religious groups are buying tickets for the spiritual movie in anticipation of its Feb. 28 release date, literally taking over theaters as part of an orchestrated campaign to support the project.
The “Theater Take-Overs” are scheduled for the night of Feb. 27.
Crossroads Church in Cincinnati is bringing thousands of people to a Cinemark theater, where Son of God will be showing on 13 screens at the same time….
“It’s very interesting to see this level of excitement around the movie,” [Cinemark marketing and communications head James] Meredith said in a statement. “The interest level for meetings, events, screenings and buyouts seems to be on par with that of major blockbuster, tentpole or franchise movies.
Church groups, some 4 million strong, are distributing tickets as part of the “takeover.” A portion of those groups will be watching the film in Spanish and Korean.
Son of God, produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, is a new film which takes footage seen in the TV miniseries The Bible along with footage never before seen.
