Many of the same singers we saw at last year’s VMA telecast on MTV will be on hand tonight to see if they will be taking home a Grammy Award or two.
What audiences likely won’t see, though, is the sight of Miley Cyrus trotting out her signature twerk moves.
The annual Grammy Awards telecast, airing at 8 p.m. EST tonight on CBS, focuses more on musical mash-ups than MTV-style outrage. That doesn’t mean the show is afraid of pushing buttons. Among the planned segments tonight includes a mass wedding ceremony featuring both straight and gay couples.
Host LL Cool J returns for a third straight year, bringing both charm and consistency. The night’s highlight could be a joint performance by surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
They won’t be the only musical combination of note.
In 2014 we have the head-scratchers Metallica with classical pianist Lang Lang, Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons, and Robin Thicke with Chicago, and we can’t wait to see how they turn out.
And there’s also Katy Perry, Lorde, Pink with fun.’s Nate Ruess, one of last year’s top winners, Sara Bareilles and Carole King, and a trio of legends – Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson – will join Blake Shelton.
Politics, beyond the statement made by the wedding segment, could still come from Perry. The buxom singer is an unabashed admirer of President Barack Obama, and given her veiled gun control tweets this weekend she could squeeze some sloganeering into her musical set.
