Right Now, Somewhere, Phil Robertson Is Fishing

Following news of Phil Robertson’s comments about the gay lifestyle in GQ magazine interview and A&E’s subsequent suspension of the star from Duck Dynasty, one thing is for sure–right now, somewhere, Robertson is fishing.

And that’s what Duck Dynasty viewers love about him–he is a man who is sure of what he knows and confident to act in light of it.

Far from what GLAAD described as the “vilest and most extreme statements uttered against LGBT people in a mainstream publication,” the millions of Americans who flock to Duck Dynasty each week didn’t hear Robertson spewing vile or extreme words. Rather, they heard him do what they’ve come to count on him to do–speak what he believes to be truth and then live by it, period.

Robertson said as much on Dec/18 when the media frenzy over his comments began.

Here is Roberston’s statement as conveyed by The Hollywood Reporter

I myself am a product of the ’60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.

This is the same Robertson who, in the middle of negotiating new Duck Dynasty episodes earlier this year, said he and his family “[would] not do the show]” if the network barred them from praying to God or talking about guns.

Robertson has been “indefinitely” suspended for expressing his personal beliefs to a magazine reporter who asked him to explain what he considers sinful. My guess is that right now, somewhere, Robertson is fishing.
