HBO is getting political–again–with two new shows bursting with left-of-center possibilities.
The pay channel announced today a new weekly series in the Daily Show mold hosted by John Oliver. The British comic kept Jon Stewart’s seat warm on the Comedy Central series over the summer, a de facto audition that landed him his new HBO gig, according to the channel’s press release.
The unnamed show will debut some time next year.
HBO also is getting back into business with Game Change director Jay Roach, who also helmed The Campaign and Recount. All three films skew left, and the new project appears to have politics deeply in mind. The Brink, a comedy pilot starring Jack Black and Tim Robbins, follows a Secretary of State (Robbins) trying to avoid World War III while avoiding “war monger” types within the government.
