The trailer for the upcoming thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit has hit the web, and it looks like director Kenneth Branagh and company have successfully updated the character of Jack Ryan to the 21st century. Check out the trailer below and some thoughts.
The movie looks slick and thrilling, and Chris Pine and Kevin Costner seem like they are pulling off some pretty cool work (although Branagh could be bordering on camp in his villain role).
The movie has the elements of a modern action movie, but it also seems to have the feeling of an old school political thriller like some of the entertaining Jack Ryan movies previously adapted into film (not the Ben Affleck one, obviously). Previously, both Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford embodied Clancy’s iconic character.
It was heart breaking to hear of the passing of author Tom Clancy last week, especially at the age of 66. The man was arguably the most popular and accurate author when it came to political thrillers, and his character of Jack Ryan will live on through literature forever. It looks like this upcoming film has a good chance of carrying on the spirit of Ryan and Clancy in the filmverse. Let’s hope so because both deserve it.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit hits theaters on December 25.
