Survey: TV Directors Mostly White – Minorities, Women Poorly Represented

Hollywood denizens pride themselves on their liberal stance toward diversity, but a new study shows just the opposite when it comes to the folks behind the cameras.

The study, conducted by the Directors Guild of America, says white men direct nearly three-quarters of the episodic television we watch, binge view or simply surf on by. The figures are essentially unchanged from the DGA’s previous year study.

The remaining 28% of episodes were divided among minority males (14%) and women (14%, with white females at 12% and minority females at 2%), the survey revealed.

Several shows had no women or minorities directing episodes, including King Street and TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland,” Uptown Productions and Nickelodeoon’s “iCarly” and FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

Another survey showed late last month that gay, lesbian and transgender actors report discrimination in Hollywood.
