Stealth Conservative 'We're the Millers' a Summer Sleeper Hit

We’re the Millers features stripping, harsh language, gun fights, a lesbian grope and a number of other features to justify the film’s “R” rating. The story’s comically swollen testicle alone was enough to earn that mark.

It’s also a surprise summer hit, and some conservatives are crediting the film’s stealth family values as a key reason why.

The film came in second place during its first full weekend of release, and last weekend its haul dropped only 32 percent, what industry observers would dub a very strong hold.

We’re the Millers stars Jason Sudeikis as a pot dealer forced to smuggle a “smidge” of marijuana from Mexico to the U.S. He decides to hire two teens and a local stripper (Jennifer Aniston) to pose as his All-American family to throw border patrol agents off their trail.

Spoiler Alert …

The silly set-up gives way to the foursome starting to bond as a family. Suddenly, these quasi-strangers find the notion of family unity appealing. The pseudo parents even get protective when an oily lothario starts to hit on their faux daughter (Emma Roberts).

Amidst all the raunchy material lies a family values theme that’s impossible to ignore.

Not every conservative will line up behind Millers. The humor is unapologetically crude, and one must wade through plenty of R-rated gags before reaching the film’s family-centric finale.

It’s precisely what theater goers will have on their minds as they leave the theater, though, and it could be a factor in the film’s box office results.
