With the Anthony Weiner scandal and the reemergence of Eliot Spitzer in electoral politics, CBS’s political drama The Good Wife seems quite a bit less than fiction these days. Star Julianna Margulies can’t believe her good fortune as the headlines surrounding both Weiner and wife Huma Abedin make her drama seem amazingly relevant.
It’s a “gift that just keeps on giving” the actress told E!.
The drama was essentially based on Spitzer’s sex scandal and depicts Chicago politician Peter Florrick [Chris Noth] who was caught stepping out on his wife [Margulies] and follows his attempt at redemption and his wife’s journey toward coping with it all.
At the end of the fourth season Florrick gets reelected despite his scandal and this strangely coincides with Spitzer’s attempt to gain elected office again with a run for New York Comptroller.
“It’s like, ‘You must be kidding! He must watch the show!’ It really feels like at first, art was imitating life, and now life is imitating art,” the actress said.
But it is the Weiner scandal that really amused Margulies.
I would never want to benefit from someone else’s pain but I have been emailing [our producers] for two weeks now. It is the gift that just keeps on giving. It is shocking that in our fifth season, this show is more relevant than ever. It’s amazing that my character is a character that women are looking to for answer as to how she feels about it. Alicia’s advice to the wives would be, ‘Go back to work. Don’t open the paper. Don’t watch TV.’
The actress had a lot of sympathy for Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. But Margulies guessed that if Weiner loses this election it won’t be long before Huma files for divorce just as Silda Spitzer is rumored to be considering.
