Celebrities routinely weigh in on political races, from large-city mayoral campaigns to the battle for the White House every four years.
Now, a group of stars is rallying around a candidate for the Big Apple’s city comptroller position, hardly a glittery affair. Could it be the presence of disgraced ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer in the race is coaxing celebrities to be heard on the matter?
Scott Stringer — whose opponent Eliot Spitzer has gotten all the headlines lately — is having a fund-raiser Aug. 6 at the Maritime Hotel, hosted by Lena Dunham, Scarlett Johansson and “Blue Jasmine” star Bobby Cannavale. Others on the event’s host committee include hotelier Sean MacPherson, jewelry designer Pamela Love and Laura Brown of Harper’s Bazaar.
Turns out several of the participants have ties to Stringer, but it’s still rare to see such a show of star power at this political level.
