The director of White House Down vowed this week to cut a check for up to $250,000 in order to promote marriage equality across the country.
Roland Emmerich, who also directed 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, offered to match donations that tally as much as that aforementioned figure for the Human Rights Campaign, a group dedicated in part to bringing gay marriage to the entire United States.
HRC won’t stop until discrimination against LGBT Americans is eliminated,” Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter. “With last week’s Supreme Court rulings, they proved it can be done, but we still have a long way to go in establishing equal rights for everyone. I support them every step of the way.
Emmerich, whose new film is flopping at the box office, made the vow on Tuesday and gave potential donors up until midnight to act. The HRC says it will start concentrating its outreach efforts regarding gay marriage to traditionally red states in the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.
