Music Doc Reaches Out to Churches for Faith-Based Marketing Push

The backup singers spotlighted in 20 Feet from Stardom have more in common than beautiful voices. Many got their start belting out songs in churches across the country.

Now, the studio behind the indie documentary are asking those churches to sing the film’s praises.

The industry’s latest outreach to the faith community hopes to push Stardom into the ranks of summer sleeper hits. The movie already is playing in select theaters but will open wider starting June 28. The film’s marketing team even cut a special trailer highlighting the subject’s gospel roots and faithful upbringings.

Among the spiritual leaders contacted for the film’s publicity outreach include: Bishops T.D. Jakes, Kenneth Ulmer, Charles Blake and Pastors Walter Thomas, Freddie Haynes and A.R. Bernard.

Director Morgan Neville interviews Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Mick Jagger in the film to pay tribute to the men and women whose harmonies make their music even better.
