Jim Carrey's 'Dumb and Dumber' Moves Hurting Once-Great Career

Is Jim Carrey’s penchant for insulting huge segments of the movie-going audience finally taking a toll on his career?

The comic rocketed to fame with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and for a good decade rattled off comedy hit after hit including the zany 1994 film Dumb and Dumber.

The box office spigot eventually slowed, and in recent years he’s been appearing more frequently in supporting roles. In between gigs, he uses his Twitter account to dehumanize Second Amendment rights supporters. More recently, he shot a music video attacking a dead actor, Charlton Heston, for his views on gun rights.

His admittedly inspired work in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone earlier this year, in which he played a gonzo magician in a sampling of scenes, couldn’t stop the film from flopping. His next chance at a hit comes with another supporting gig in Kick Ass 2  set for release later this summer.

This week, we learned Carrey’s seemingly can’t miss sequel to Dumb and Dumber is being dropped by Warner Bros., forcing the film’s creative team to seek new backers.

Audiences can be fickle. For every actor like Clint Eastwood who sustains the public’s trust for decades there are others who simply fall out of favor for a variety of reasons, often through little fault of their own.

In Carrey’s case, it could be tied to the disdain he shows for potential movie goers who dare disagree with his views.
