The new Man of Steel doesn’t shy away from the character’s American roots–despite our hero’s alien DNA. The film embraces it.
That wasn’t necessarily the case with the 2006 film Superman Returns, a movie which mangled the character’s iconic line, “Truth, justice and the American way” to appease anyone horrified by a pro-U.S. slant.
Man of Steel, in theaters June 14, finds Superman (Henry Cavill) struggling to come to terms with his unique dual heritage. When his loyalties are questioned during the film, Superman offers a simple response.
“I grew up in Kansas. I’m about as American as you get,” he says.
