HBO's Liberace Biopic Scores Gaudy Ratings

Director Steven Soderbergh famously said no movie studio would touch Behind the Candelabra, the biopic of late pianist Liberace, because the tale was “too gay.”

HBO had no problem with such content, and now the pay channel is reaping the benefits.

Behind the Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas as the closeted musician, drew 2.4 million viewers Sunday night, the most for any HBO telepic debut since Something the Lord Made attracted 2.6 million back in 2004.

Candelabra, which co-starred Matt Damon as Liberace’s young lover, captured both the pianist’s flashy public life as well as the homosexual passions he kept hidden from his fans.
