Can anyone say Spider-Man 3 was the strongest entry in director Sam Raimi’s web-slinger franchise? How about Batman and Robin, the fourth film in the original Bat series?
Sequels rarely eclipse the original, even if they still sell enough tickets to warrant future installments.
Yet many reviewers analyzing the 2012 film Skyfall, the 23rd film in the James Bond franchise, argued it was among the best entries in the series. It points to the enduring appeal of the franchise, the talents of the actors charged with bringing Bond to life and the sturdy nature of the spy genre.
Now, one of the most gifted directors in Hollywood is circling the 24th installment. Christopher Nolan, who already gave us the grand Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, is in talks to direct the next Bond adventure.
It’s early days, but informal talks have begun between Nolan, his representatives and the powers behind the James Bond pictures, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G .Wilson.
No deal has been signed just yet, but the fact that Nolan would even consider such a gig tells us plenty about the Bond brand. Nolan could land virtually any superhero franchise, remake or reboot he desired, but he’s mulling 007’s next adventure.
Bond remains a force for good, an uncompromising hero who not only saves the day but gets the girl (or girls) while looking natty in a tux.
No other franchise, frankly, can touch the Bond series for longevity, consistency and sheer entertainment value. And should Nolan sign on the dotted line, there’s a chance the best for Bond is yet to come.
