Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal won’t be adding to the conversation on gay rights much longer.
The NBC sitcom got canceled during a flurry of television pink slips handed out over the last few days. But Normal, which featured a gay couple and helped push the issue of same sex marriage into popular culture, stands as one of the more unexpected cancellations.
The show starred Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells and Ellen Barkin and, in its first and only season, directly tackled issues like the Boy Scouts’ stance on accepting gay members. The series had planned to explore in greater detail gay parenting in season two had Murphy’s first broadcast sitcom lured enough viewers to merit renewal.
