The Broadway show Orphans got all the publicity–both welcome and unwelcome–any production could demand.
Not only does the show star Alec Baldwin, but co-star Shia LaBeouf left mid-production in a huff. The latter feud earned the show even more press than usual. You’d be hard pressed to live in the Big Apple and not have Orphans on your entertainment radar.
All of the above, plus a Tony nomination for Best Revival, wasn’t enough to stop the show from closing more than a month before schedule.
Despite its starry cast and a Tony Award nomination for best revival of a play, Daniel Sullivan’s production of the 1983 Lyle Kessler drama will close on May 19. The limited engagement originally had been scheduled to run through June 30.
