Adam Carolla is no stranger to the P.C. police. He simply refuses to hold his hands out so they can slap the cuffs on him.
Carolla offered some advice to his fellow comedians during a recent podcast on how to handle the inevitable bruised feelings from pointed punch lines.
Don’t give in. Naturally, Carolla leaned on a colorful metaphor or two to hammer home his argument.
“These paper tigers who try to knock you down and make you apologize … they put pressure on you,” he said. “What you need to do is not negotiate with terrorists.”
“As soon as you stop apologizing these guys are out of business … it’s like people who take hostages … if no one ever paid ransom on a hostage it would end,” he said. “If you pay, if you negotiate and pay, then they’ll take more hostages.”
Carolla then recalled how the Church of Scientology tried to make his former Loveline co-host Dr. Drew Pinsky apologize for a comment the doctor made about the religion during the 1990s. The duo mocked the pressure to apologize, going so far as to read the exchance the Church crafted that it wanted to radio hosts to read on the air.
Of course, Carolla has an advantage over most comedians. He’s a self-made man whose “pirate ship” leaves him without a formal boss with whom he need answer.
“I don’t have to pretend to apologize for a joke I made,” he said.
