Celebrities lined up behind President Barack Obama’s attempt to pass stricter gun control legislation in the wake of the Newtown school shooting, using everything from PSA-style videos to nasty musical shorts to curry the public’s favor.

Now, despite a new poll saying gun control barely registers on the average voter’s mind, some of those celebrities are openly mourning the legislative defeat of Obama’s background check initiative.

Anchorman director Adam McKay couldn’t hold back his revulsion over today’s Senate vote.

Comedy veteran Albert Brooks applied his droll wit to express his disappointment in the latest gun control news.

Actress Rashida Jones of Parks and Recreation fame took a more calm approach, treating the news as if she were heckling the star of an opposing ball team.

Actor Jason O’Mara of CBS’s Vegas rarely strikes a political note on his Twitter account, but he couldn’t hold back after learning of the gun control measure’s demise.

Actress Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, 30 Rock) suggested we needed another tragedy to push Obama’s legislation over the hump, ignoring how the president couldn’t even unify his own party for the vote.

Comedian Mike Birbiglia of Sleepwalk with Me fame ignored the complexities of the gun control debate with this simplistic tweet.

Update: Twitchy captures more celebrity outrage:

Jason Alexander: Our Congress is officially owned but not by us. 90% of us wanted gun reforms. We got shot. That’s NRA. And that is representative govt. now.

Comedian Richard Lewis: Many in the Senate and the Congress care more about their jobs on a watered-down bill over potential mass murders and suicides with guns.

Bette Midler: Today, the US SENATE VOTED AGAINST 91% OF THE COUNTRY THAT WANTS BACKGROUND CHECKS. WE ARE TAKING NAMES, MOTHERFUCKERS!!
