Fox’s Glee, hardly shy about tackling social issues, featured a school shooting in last night’s episode. The story gave show creator Ryan Murphy the chance to use one of the show’s main characters to deliver a speech attacking critics of President Barack Obama efforts on new gun control legislation.
The April 11 episode featured a pair of gunshots heard in the school, forcing students to run for cover, text notes to their loved ones and even record short video statements in case they didn’t survive.
(Episode spoiler alert)
The shooting proves to be an accident, and Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester character ends up taking the blame. She says she brought a gun to school in case a school shooting ever took place, but on that fateful day it went off by accident.
“It’s a different world,” she tells him. “The safety net of the public mental health system is gone. Parents with troubled kids are too busy working three jobs to look after them and the gun yahoos have everyone so worked up about Obama taking away their guns that every house has a readily available arsenal.”
