Stephen Colbert, who hosts the faux conservative show The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, couldn’t resist mocking the new History Channel miniseries The Bible.
Colbert taunted miniseries producer/co-star Roma Downey, who plays Mary in the production.
“Wow, I wonder who she had to sleep with to get that part? Nobody … it’s called the Immaculate Audition,” he joked.
He also said the actor playing Jesus in the miniseries, Diogo Morgado, was too handsome for the role.
“Give us a shlubby, broken down Jesus we can identify with,” he said.
Not content to target the miniseries itself, he said the project’s limited ambitions, storytelling-wise, made sense based on the source material.
“The word of God, the story of all creation, doesn’t really have the legs to sustain an entire series unlike The History Channel’s Big Shrimpin'” he said.
