GLAAD is honoring Brett Ratner for going through the group’s very public apology tour after his gay slur cost him his Oscar producing gig in late 2011.
The director has been tapped to receive the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s inaugural Ally Award as part of the watchdog group’s 24th annual Media Awards on March 16 in New York, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Ratner said “rehearsing is for fags” during the runup to his Oscar show producing assignment. GLAAD pounced, not only pressuring the Academy to remove Ratner from the job but later recruiting Ratner for a three-year series of public service announcements to reduce intolerance against gays and lesbians in popular culture.
Ratner’s honor won’t be the first, as GLAAD says it expects to honor more individuals in the coming years.
