'Superman' Artist Quits Over Protests Surrounding Anti-Gay Marriage Writer

The artist assigned to illustrate author Orson Scott Card’s upcoming Superman series for DC Comics is leaving the gig in the wake of protests regarding Card’s views on gay issues.

Due to the media attention surrounding the science-fiction writer and his story in the forthcoming Adventures of Superman, artist Chris Sprouse — who was to illustrate a tale by Card and Aaron Johnston — has departed from the book, according to DC Comics.

Sprouse released a statement to the media explaining his decision:

“The media surrounding this story reached the point where it took away from the actual work, and that’s something I wasn’t comfortable with. My relationship with DC Comics remains as strong as ever and I look forward to my next project with them.”

Card, whose work inspired the upcoming science fiction film Enders Game, opposes gay marriage and has said the gay lifestyle is a “choice.”

The future of Card’s Superman story may be in jeopardy, according to Wired.com.
