'Zero Dark Thirty' Huge in Limited Release, Barbra Streisand's 'Trip' Stumbles

Maybe it’s true that any publicity is good publicity – even if said publicity involves senators calling your film “dangerous.”

“Zero Dark Thirty” opened in very limited release yesterday and scored big with urban audiences.

This reteaming of The Hurt Locker‘s Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal starring Jessica Chastain in a 2 hour, 37 minute semi-fictional hunt for Bin Laden looks to have scored the biggest Wednesday limited opening ever without a stage show….

Early numbers indicated a giant $124,848 its first day from just 5 runs for a per screen average of $24,969.

The news wasn’t so good for Barbra Streisand’s comeback film. Yes, the avowed Republican hater did appear in two “Fockers” films, but her turn in the just-released comedy “The Guilt Trip” represents her meatiest project since 1996’s “The Mirror Has Two Faces.”

“Trip” is fairing badly so far, and the movie will face stiffer competition this weekend from the likes of “Jack Reacher” and “This is 40.” Wonder if Streisand’s near-constant GOP bashing alienated Middle America to the point where its denizens chose to avoid her latest film?
